HE WHO JUDGES ISRAEL!

1 Corinthians 10:11
Now these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction, on whom the end of the ages has come.

After God delivered the Children of Israel from Egypt with His Mighty Arm He commanded that any future king of Israel should, not … cause the people to return to Egypt … (Deuteronomy 17:16). Because of this commandment, some in Jewish religious circles conclude that once a Jew returns to Israel, to the Land of his ancestors, it is a sin to leave it again, even temporarily. But was the commandment to be applied solely within a geographical understanding?

Eight centuries after the Exodus, the Children of Israel had gone full circle. Subject to a coup within their own royal house they fear the fury of Nebuchadnezzar, so the remnant from the Babylonian deportation decides to seek refuge in Egypt. They seek the advice (or demand the approval) of Jeremiah the prophet who by the Word of Hashem tells them to stay put in Israel. They reject the counsel and go anyways, taking Jeremiah with them as a prisoner (Jeremiah 46). Hashem must have foreseen this event for He warned them of this before they even entered the Promised Land (Deuteronomy 17:16).

It is easy to judge and criticize the Children of Israel for this blatant bout of disobedience. Children are known to love to judge their parents, especially teenagers! Yes; we can look at them and say, “Why? Why didn’t they trust God and obey the commandment, especially when Jeremiah told them? Can’t they remember all the bounty and power God showed them in the past …etc …” Yes it is easy to react that way, but the only way to have mercy and compassion on others is to have a good hard and honest look at ourselves. A rule for Jewish judges was that if a judge could not see within himself the fault of the person he was to judge, he would be self-righteous and therefore not fit to judge that person. Seeing the fault of others in ourselves provides us with the Spirit of the Judge of the earth who took on sin upon Himself so He could judge us righteously (Isaiah 11:1-4). He still asks us, Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye (Matthew 7:3)?. We must remember that, these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction, on whom the end of the ages has come (1 Corinthians 10:11). A good honest look at ourselves easily reveals the spirit of fear and compromise which stifles our effectiveness for Him as well as eats at our trust in obeying His word of personal revelation to us. It is usually at the end of our lives when we realize how we have missed the boat. We see then how we have allowed fear and personal interest to provoke us to compromise and choose a life of seeming safety instead of launching out like Abraham into a bright future that could not be altered no matter what.

May we learn from the Children who tried to find safety in returning to their old lives. May we learn that we are safer in a desert surrounded by enemies if God is with us that in that within a shaded walled garden with supplies yet without Hashem. We need this lesson to help us face the days to come. We need to live it today so we can teach it to our children for their days to come … and that of their children’s!

WE NEED A SECOND CHANUKAH REVOLT

12/9/2012

Matthew 24:15
So when you see the abomination of desolation spoken of by the prophet Daniel, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand) …

From Cain to Nebuchadnezzar, everyone who tried to conquer the Jewish, the People of the Covenant, did it forcefully through land and military conquest. In his Jewish Antiquities, Flavius Josephus gives a detailed account of Alexander the Great's visit to Jerusalem and the transpiring events that caused him not to invade and destroy it. Even though Alexander the Great did not conduct a military campaign against Jerusalem, the Hellenic empire is responsible for the historically most successful conquest of the People of God, and that through cultural assimilation. The Western philosophical Greek is as opposite to the Eastern covenantal Jew as day is opposite from night, but is commonly said, 'opposites attract!'

When Israel had gotten truly addicted to Hellenism and even had a Greek appointed corrupt Jewish High-Priest, all Antiochus Epiphanes thought he had to do was to send his emissary with a list of reforms to put all of Judaism into his evil hands. He didn't expect the Maccabee revolt. From where I stand, the Maccabees may have won the war and rededicated the Temple, Antiochus Epiphanes may be dead, but the form of Anti-Semitism that he taught is still alive and vibrant.

In his great graciousness and compassion Hashem gave us His Messiah. This  Jewish, Righteous, and Torah-observant Messiah was high-jacked by Greco-Roman believers who in less than two hundred years displayed Him as a Roman god dressed as a Greek Adonis teaching Greek philosophy. Under a twisted ignorant interpretation of Paul's epistles, this identity theft of our Messiah included the same set of religious reforms initiated by Antiochus Epiphanes which are to stop observing the Sabbath, practicing circumcision, eating according to biblical dietary laws, and studying theology as per the Torah.

As a Jewish believer, I find myself in awe that today, my non-Jewish brothers live by the same religious reforms as those pushed by Antiochus Epiphanes and even find myself shunned from their fellowship as one whose, to say the least, theology is overly influenced by Judaism. I wonder what Yeshua would think of the fact that if I want fellowship with non-Jewish believers, I have to live by Antiochus Epiphanes rules.

It may be OK for others, but Jewish believers need another Chanukah revolt where with Matthias Maccabee we say "NO" to Antiochus Epiphanes' rules and live our faith in Messiah according to the terms of the covenant Hashem gave to His people. Maybe that Day will be the Day of Messiah. May Hashem give us another Matthias Maccabee who will stand for us and lead us into the cultural battle to defeat Antiochus Epiphanes once and for all!

May it be soon Abba, even in our days.

EMPEROR HADRIAN, THE 10 RABBIS, AND ANTISEMITISM

Matthew 7:6
"Do not give dogs what is holy, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, lest they trample them underfoot and turn to attack you."

Until this day, we Jews are persecuted for our stubborn adherence to the tenets of the Torah. We always hope that if we could get people to understand It better, they would understand, so we try to teach it to them. Ironically, our Master used the Biblical Instruction of feeding ritually unclean meat to dogs (Exodus 22:31) to give us a warning about the dangers of teaching Torah to the spiritually ignorant. In the following words Yeshua said, "Do not give dogs what is holy, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, lest they trample them underfoot and turn to attack you (Matthew 7:6).

Nowhere is the Master's warning better illustrated as in the story of the ten second century Jewish sages who, traditionally, were tortured and martyred on the orders of the Roman emperor Hadrian. The account is based on the medieval Midrash Eleh Ezkerah. According to the Midrash, the Roman ruler asked rabbis what the Jewish law prescribes as punishment for one who kidnaps and sells a fellow Jew. The rabbis informed him that the Bible stipulates that the criminal be put to death. The emperor then brought up the case of Joseph, who was kidnapped by his ten brothers and sold as a slave to Egypt. He argued that since the brothers were not sentenced to death, ten sages of Israel must be put to death in their place. The problem is that the Roman Emperor, being ignorant of the Torah could not wisely balance Its commandments. He did not know the verse that says … nor shall children be put to death because of their fathers. Each one shall be put to death for his own sin (Deuteronomy 24:16).

Hadrian's rhetoric for anti-Semitism has remained within Christianity at large. Today many people still blame the tragic History of the Jewish nation on a accusation of deicide by Jews in the first Century C.E. This accusation resonates the same way as one who would decide to hate all white Americans for the decisions of one white American President many years ago. This comfortable rhetoric though, helps the Christian world to shirk responsibility for 2,000 years of cruel persecution of Jews and provides the water needed to wash their bloody hands saying with Pilate, I am innocent of this man's blood (Matthew 27:24).

Yes, the Father visits the sins of the parents on the children, but only to the third or fourth generation (Exodus 34:7), and even then, God said that children shall not be put to death for the sins of the fathers (Deuteronomy 24:16). So even if by the wildest stretch of one's imagination it were true that Jews were nationally responsible for the death of Yeshua, the Inquisitions and the Holocaust are no justifications for it.

What remains now is the fact that people need to realize that the only reason for bigotry of any kind is man's unregenerate heart. May the world think on these things as again it is faced with very serious decisions concerning the fate of Israel and of the Jewish nation in the world.

THE JOSEPH/ISRAEL/MESSIAH CONNECTION

12/3/2012

1Timothy 3:6
Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil (KJV).

It is easy to see Joseph the son of Jacob as a foreshadow of Messiah. Even classic Judaism presents Joseph as prefiguring the Messiah. Because of the messianic allusions to both Joseph and Judah, Judaism even believes in two Messiahs; first a suffering one: Joseph, and second a ruling one: Judah. We know now that the two ideas are resolved in Yeshua’s first and second coming.

Joseph and Judah were the recognized heads over the families conceived by their respective mothers: Leah and Rachel. Tensions were high between the two brothers, which resulted in the dividing of the country.

From the onstart, Joseph seemed rather unwise. He flaunted his father Jacob’s preferential love strutting around in his princely coat. He also probably didn’t have to pull in as much of a work load as his brothers. He was treated like a first-born. To add insult to injury, Joseph volunteered his seemingly narcistic dreams at which even Jacob was astounded. His brothers even surnamed him, ‘The Master of Dreams’, which proved in fact true, as the story confirms later (Genesis 37).

Joseph was truly the ‘Master’ of dreams’, and he was to be established over his family and the known world of his day for that matter. But in order to fulfill his destiny he still needed the humiliations that only slavery and unjust incarceration could offer. It doesn’t seem to be good enough for Hashem that we fulfill our destiny for Him. This is true of all of us. If we are to represent Him through our life or even verbal messages, we are to represent Him properly by exerting a life of humility and virtue He can be proud of. Before being finally given his God-given destiny, like Joseph, every man needs to go through rejection, slavery and the cruel injustice of man. Only the distress and humiliation of wrong and unjust treatment provides the qualities needed for Godly leadership. Without it, any would-be leader of God’s people is prone to the pitfalls of novices.

Come to think of it, the same was told of Messiah (Hebrews 5:8). Yeshua was not to be given the crown without the cross. As a nation, it is also true of God’s people. For centuries, like Joseph and Messiah, the nation of Israel as a whole was afflicted by the world without as cause, just for being Jews. We are told though that it is God who put ‘blindness’ on Israel for awhile so that the nations could have their time (Romans 11:25). This time of humiliation of Israel serves therefore to prepare him for its priestly destiny in the World to Come (Exodus 19:6).

As we approach the time of the fulfillment of the Messianic era, the true followers of Messiah will all be unjustly treated, just because they are God’s people (Revelations 12:17). May this coming tribulation, as it did with Joseph, heal us from our arrogance, pride, and immaturity that we may be worthy to rule and reign with Him in the World to Come (Revelations 20:4).

LABAN: ANTISEMITISM YESTERDAY AND TODAY!

11/21/2012

Revelations 12:12
Therefore, rejoice, O heavens and you who dwell in them! But woe to you, O earth and sea, for the devil has come down to you in great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!"

Jacob is in exile (he is not called Israel yet). His exile could seem as the result of simple feuding rivalries at home, but it is also part of a greater Divine plan to create the foundational family that is to become the gates of the Kingdom of God for the rest of the world (Revelations 21:12).

The heavenly purposes of Hashem do not settle on earth without struggle. The deceit and rivalries that brought him to this 'Babylonian' exile would follow Jacob to Laban's house. There he would be deceived by a man who swapped his younger sister for the older one (like Jacob did with his father) creating a feud between Rachel and Leah as they tried to 'out-birth' each other to win Jacob's favor. But Jacob's heart was set on Rachel.

Laban for his part saw the favor of God on Jacob during his exile. Whatever he did turned to gold, which made his Babylonian task-master jealous and want to keep Jacob no matter what the price. Whatever Laban did to out maneuver Jacob, God blessed his chosen-one. This infuriated Laban (Genesis 30).

As Jacob went in exile for twenty years fleeing from Esau who was also called 'Edom', present-day Israel has been in exile for twenty-centuries. The Sages of the Talmud actually surnamed this exile the 'Edomite' exile. As Hashem prospered Jacob while in exile, God also always prospers the Jewish people while in exile.  We see it in Jacob and Laban, the Children of Israel in Egypt, and now in the world. In every age, this has caused the 'Labans' and the 'Pharaohs' to despise the Children of Israel. As it was Jacob, the world often envies Jewish success. Esau's problem was that of a sibling rivalry, but Laban's attitude embodies the heart of Anti-Semitism throughout the ages. Till this day, the 'Jacob' shrewd and heartless Jewish businessman stereotypes as found in Shakespeare's work 'The Merchant of Venice' and even in the famed 'Christmas Carol' Ebenezer Scrooge and Jacob Marley lingers on.

Today, as the divine Plan of universal restoration comes to its completion, the devil screams and shrieks in fear. Anti-Semitism rises its ugly timeless head again as both 'Esau' (the Arab world), and Laban (the world at large) seem to mount an endless propaganda war against Israel and Jews worldwide.

Don't they know the story? Haven't they read it in the Book? No matter what anyone may do or say in of the great governmental institutions of man, time may demand its due, but as it was before, Jacob returns to its dear Promised Land under the name of Israel. There he lays the foundations of a kingdom that will eventually rule the entire world through one of his descendant: Yeshua.

May it be soon Abba, even in our days!
