JERUSALEM: OUR MOTHER!

Galatians 4:26
"But the Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother."

Then Isaac brought her (Rebecca) into the tent of Sarah his mother and took Rebekah, and she became his wife, and he loved her. (Genesis 24:67. It is said that in seeking a wife a man looks for another mother. Today, our stubborn demand for individuality makes potential wives want to distinguish and define themselves against their husband’s mothers. A man will often refer to his mother’s cooking as the best. New wives who haven’t sat learning at the feet of an older Mom feel they can’t compete and this often creates deep issues within families.

In the ancient world, a betrothed woman would spend her betrothal time until marriage learning about the things that please her husband. She would learn from his parents, mostly his mother and others who knew him well. She would learn to prepare the food he likes, wear clothes and do her hair in the manner that he liked, as well as behave in the way that he liked. Today the mentality is more of, ‘if you love me, you take me as I am’. There is no respect for continuity, traditions, or culture and in the end, grand-children live in a different world than that of their grand-parents. This creates fragmented families. That’s why it is hard for old people today; they feel everything they know and taught their children is obsolete and as a result they feel useless!

Sarah was the matriarch. Whole traditions of hospitality, care, wisdom and even of the prophetic gift have developed around her. She was a tough act to follow; that’s why Eliezer’s mission of finding Isaac a wife was so crucial. Though coming from the idolatrous culture of Babylon, she had to have the right spirit and endorse the traditions of Sarah, and she did. Isaac wanted and needed her to enter into his 'mother’s tent' and continue in the godly traditions of his Mom. Things would have been different if she would have said, ‘Look, I am not living in your mother’s tent; can’t you give me my own tent; I am my own person after all, I left my parents house for you so you take me as I am …etc …etc…’.

Jewish prophetic eschatology compares Sarah to Jerusalem. After her second captivity, Sarah birthed Isaac. After the binding of Isaac, Sarah dies which narration is followed by Isaac’s marriage to Rebecca … after a long time. This order of event is not coincidental. Classic Judaism always looked upon Isaac as foreshadow picture of the coming Messiah. Like Isaac, Yeshua had a miraculous birth and was sacrificed on the altar; the sacking and consequent dying of Jerusalem follows under the Roman Empire.  A long time after, the text tells us, Yeshua will return to marry His bride.

Even now today, like Eliezer (meaning: my God is my help) of old did, the Holy Spirit, roams in the earth in search of the bride who will enter ‘Jerusalem/Sarah’s tent’ and continue in the Jewish traditions of His Mom; the bride where the Sabbath’ candle burns continually and where the ‘dough’ is blessed.

May we spend our time in preparation to please our Messiah, learning from the Torah all the things that please Him.

SARAH, HAGAR,  AND PAUL!

Romans 11:12, 18
Now if their trespass means riches for the world, and if their failure means riches for the Gentiles, how much more will their full inclusion mean!? Do not be arrogant toward the branches. If you are, remember it is not you who support the root, but the root that supports you.

“You find that as long as Sarah lived, a cloud hung over her tent … her doors were wide open … there was a blessing on her dough, and the lamp used to burn from the evening of the Sabbath until the evening of the following Sabbath …" In this scrap of tradition, Sarah’s tent is homiletically compared to Jerusalem typified by the Temple. The cloud is symbolic of the Shekinah of God’s presence, the doors of the temple being wide opened is an invitation to the world to the house of prayer (as Yeshua called it); the blessed dough is the showbread which miraculously never spoiled, and the lamp is the seven-branches candelabrum which burned continuously in the Holy Place.

In the Book of Galatians Paul builds on this illustration. Using the concept that Judaism views Sarah as the great matriarch he says, But the Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother. Then, using Isaiah’s allegory and adding the fact that that Sarah was barren (not Hagar) He quotes, "Rejoice, O barren one who does not bear; break forth and cry aloud, you who are not in labor! Though Paul doesn’t quote it, the rest of the oracle says, Enlarge the place of your tent, and let the curtains of your habitations be stretched out; do not hold back; lengthen your cords and strengthen your stakes (Isaiah 54:1-2; Galatians 4:26).This is an illustration that Jerusalem, (the center of Jewish religion) is one day to open its doors to all nations. The next chapter of Isaiah goes on to call all nations to drink and be fed from the fountain of Jerusalem (Isaiah 55; Zechariah 14:16).

Referring to modern history, I now will build on this concept. In their impatience while waiting on God to fulfill the messianic promise of the birth of Isaac, Abraham and Sarah brought Hagar into the picture. As Hagar bore fruit she despised and boasted against Sarah who was still barren and dry. In His own time, Hashem miraculously caused Sarah to bear the fruit of the messianic promise. In the end, though blessed by God because of beloved Abraham, Hagar paid for her attitude having to leave Sarah’s presence.

For 2,000 years while waiting for the 19th century when Jerusalem would miraculously birth the present-day world-wide Messianic movement, the nations of the world, who did bear fruit unto Yeshua have done so while ‘boasting’ against the ‘natural branches’ in a doctrine called ‘Replacement Theology’, and even subjecting these ‘natural branches’ to horrible persecutions (or were silent in the face of it).

Will the nations suffer the same fate as Hagar? The Text tells us that not, but that in the end Jerusalem will return to its rightful original owners, and that the nations will come and serve and worship God in Jerusalem, bringing in their glory (Isaiah 66; Haggai 2:7). For what it’s worth, there is an ancient Jewish teaching which suggests that Keturah, Abraham’s second wife after Sarah died, is actually Hagar returned (Genesis 25:1-6).

THE SARAH JERUSALEM CONNECTION

“Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.”

The dear sages who compared Jerusalem to Sarah our matriarch could not have foreseen the extent of their analogy. In the midrash of the barren woman, Hashem reveals the messianic future of His dear city to the prophet Isaiah. Since its sacking by the Romans in the first century C.E.,  many have looked at Jerusalem just as Isaiah saw her: a barren woman sitting on a heap of ashes, ostracized and rejected by her husband because of her many infidelities (Isaiah 54; Jeremiah 26:6).

One of the legends I like the most is the one about the weaning of Isaac. It is said that Abraham called in a great feast (Genesis 21:8). The rumor had gone around that Isaac was actually Pharaoh Abimelek’s child  (Genesis 20:2). Not only people couldn't believe that old Abraham sired a boy, but they also could not conceive Sarah lactating at ninety years old. The point of the feast was to vindicate the miracle God had performed and put the rumors to rest. Great Sheiks came from all around in great caravans and pomp to attend Abraham’s feast. To prove herself, not only did Sarah nursed her son, but she offered to nurse every baby in the camp. She did, and the story goes on to say that every child Sarah nursed eventually became a king or a person of great influence and integrity. Also, in order to erase any doubt that the child was truly Abraham’s, God had made the face of Isaac similar to that of his father, so that it was said that he who saw the son saw the father. Sounds familiar doesn’t it (John 14:9)?

Look now why our ages compared Sarah to Jerusalem. Just like Sarah was, twice Jerusalem was conquered and taken captive by foreigners, first by the Babylonians, and the second by the Romans. With the re-establishment of the State of Israel, the Roman captivity  shows signs of coming to its end. Having the past of Jerusalem in Sarah's life, let us now see now its future.

After the return from her second captivity, Isaac, the promised child, the fore-shadow of Messiah was born. Sarah who barren and past the age, finally bore fruit. In the same manner today, Jerusalem, one of the oldest city in the world, a city that has been used, abused, rejected, redeemed, to be rejected again and re-redeemed, prides itself of a new vibrant Messianic community rising all over in Israel: the ‘remnant of the seed of the woman’ (Revelation 12:17) preparing the way for the soon return of the King (Revelations 19). The same miracle that rejuvenated Sarah to conceive Isaac and lactate happens in our day through Jerusalem. Think of it: a whole country was re-born in a day with a new generation of messianic believers preparing the way for the soon-coming of the King who will rule the earth in the justice and righteousness of the Father. Will they become the kings of integrity ‘nursed’ to rule in the Jerusalem of the World to Come? May it be soon Abba, even in our days!

Those who would try to interfere with the miraculous plan of God are playing with the unstoppable spiritual and natural forces that created the heavens and the earth. May they beware!

JERUSALEM: CITY OF PEACE!

Hebrews 11:10
  For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God.

At Mt Horeb, God instructed the people of Israel about the different types of offerings. The first one mentioned in the Book of Leviticus is the ‘burnt offering’ called in the Hebrew the ’olah’ or ‘the offering of ascent’. This offering is fully burnt and dedicated to God; no-one else receives any benefit from it like with the other offerings. This speaks  a total abandonment to Hashem without reservations. This is what Abraham was asked to do with Isaac on Mt Moriah, which he did with the ram provided by Adonai.

This event took place at Mt Moriah, the place occupied by the city of Salem where Melchizedec was king. This was also the place where later, at the time when David sinfully decided to take a census of the nation Israel, an angel destroyed many people with a plague (2 Samuel 24). Under the instructions of Gad the prophet, David bought the place to build an altar so he could make an offering for Adonai. We must remember at this point that God had forbidden altars to be built in random places. The only altar to be used so far was the one in Shiloh by the Ark. This was therefore a strange command from Gad, but David also knew that at some point and time, Hashem had a place in the Land of Canaan where He would write His Name. A traditional source tells us that in order to honor both Melchizedec and Abraham, David later renamed the place, ‘Yireh-Salem’, or Jerusalem meaning: ‘He will provide peace’. What a name for a city that has seen more than its share of wars and conflicts and still waits for ‘the big one’!

Oh but He will provide peace. Like Abraham we must not stop our eyes at this imperfect world. We must seek for our true homeland; desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. That’s why Hashem is not ashamed to be called our God, for He has prepared for us a city, a city that will finally see and know peace, a peace like no other city or even country in the world has ever known or seen. Not a ‘Pax Jerusalema’ enforced type of peace, but a peace from within originated by Yeshua the Messiah: the Prince of Peace Himself.

This Jerusalem is the city with foundations, whose designer and builder is the Almighty God. Abba, the Father.  He has the true peace-plan and road-map to peace in Jerusalem. Yes, Jerusalem will see peace; He promised it (Hebrews 11:10, 16)!

RETURNING TO JERUSALEM

Luke 24:31-33
And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. … "Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures?"  …  that same hour and returned to Jerusalem.

On the third day after the crucifixion, on the first day of the week, women came to the tomb to embalm the Master. To their great surprise Yeshua's body had ‘disappeared’. Though incredulous, upon hearing the women’s accounts Peter and John ran to the tomb only to be faced with the same conclusions. Yeshua soon comforted the disciple’s worries appearing to them on several occasions. While all this transpired in Jerusalem, two disciples who had come to Judea for the pilgrimage festival of Passover left for Emmaus (Luke 24).

As Cleopas and his travelling companion still grieved the death of their Master, a ‘stranger’ joined them on their journey. As their new co-journeyer wondered at the disciples’ conversation, they asked, ‘Don’t you know what happened three days ago in Jerusalem? We thought that the famous Galilean prophet, Yeshua of Nazareth, was the Messiah. We thought He would be the one gathering back the Children of Israel from the four corners of the earth and re-establish us as a sovereign country but alas, the religious authorities did not approve of Him; they turned Him in to the Romans to be crucified as traitor and a criminal. To top it all, some our friends went to the tomb this morning and found it empty. We are still shocked at the whole thing, and also confused.”

Upon hearing this account, starting with Moses and the prophets, the ‘stranger’ demonstrated to the disciples that all had happened according to Scripture and that they should not worry. Hearing the Scriptures in their Messianic perspective filled the discouraged disciples with hope again. As they arrived in Emmaus, they invited the ‘stranger to dine with them. As they sat at the table, the ‘stranger’ opened the meal with a blessing and it is at that time that He opened their eyes. They then realized that their travelling companion was the resurrected Master. Right away they decided to return to Jerusalem.

This story is everyone’s story. In confusion and discouragement, we often leave ‘Jerusalem’ to return to the same old ways. As with the other disciples, no empty tomb or amount of convincing preaching could have changed these Jewish disciples mind. They needed to see the resurrected Master and He needed to open their eyes. It is also the only way that Israel as a nation will eventually see and recognize it’s Messiah: not by preaching, but when He comes in the cloud in the end of time (Zechariah12:10; Acts 1:11). When they recognized their beloved Master, they repented and returned to Jerusalem.

Meeting the resurrected Master should create in us a spirit of repentance bringing us back to the origins of our faith, to the place where we belong, to 'Jerusalem'. After three days of Yeshua being absent, the disciples were already straying from the faith, but the Master ran after them. He met them at the tomb, and in their house where He spoke with Thomas (John 20:27). He even met them on the road to Emmaus, just in order to bring them back to ‘Jerusalem’ where they were to remain until the next pilgrimage festival: Shavuot/Pentecost (Acts 1:4).

In these days of preparation for the awesome day of Yom Kippur, may our meditations grant us the presence of the Master that causes us to repent and return, repent from our straying and back to the ‘Jerusalem’ where we belong. May we be found doing His will on the Day of His coming.

A SONG ECHOING THROUGH TIME

Revelations 15:3
And they sing the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, "Great and amazing are your deeds.

3,400 years ago the Children of Israel celebrated a great victory on the Eastern bank of the Gulf of Aqaba. Miraculously supplied with ‘bread from heaven (John 6:31)’ they crossed the Sinai Desert Pharaoh’s armies at their heels. Later they saw more of the majestic power of God as the waters of the Red Sea stood as walls at their sides to give them passage. Then they witnessed the same receding waters swallow the army of their enemy whole dealing a deathly blow to the power that once was Egypt. The Biblical records tell us that of, “all the host of Pharaoh that had followed them into the sea, not one of them remained (Exodus 14:28).” On the other side, in the Land called today Saudi Arabia but then Midian, under the leadership of Moses and Miriam the Children of Israel erupted into a song of praise that will echo through the centuries (Exodus 15).

The song of Miriam finds an echo over a hundred years after the initial conquest of the Land. After Joshua’s death, Israel was left without central leadership. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes (Judges 17:6), so, the LORD sold them into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan, who reigned in Hazor (Judges 4:2). Eventually, when Israel is ready to amend his ways, God allows Judge/prophetess Deborah and military leader Barak to muster an army to challenge Jabin.   As Sisera, Jabin’s general, positions his army to intercept Israel, God again works in Israel’s favor. He shows His great glory and power while unleashing from the sky a torrential storm thus flooding the Kishon waterway (Judges 4). The flood waters and muddy ground rendered Sisera’s chariots helpless and vulnerable to Israel’s army. The Biblical records again tell us that ‘all the army of Sisera fell by the edge of the sword; not a man was left (Judges 4:16). Again, an army trying to trap Israel was rendered helpless through a flood of waters. Like with Moses and Miriam, Barak and Deborah celebrated with a song (Judges 5).

Is there another echo?

Zechariah tells us of another war against Israel; a war where all nations will rise against Jerusalem (Zechariah 14). At that time it is a flood of blood that will render the armies of the enemy useless (Revelations 14:20). By the Mountain of Megiddo, at the same place where Sisera’s army fell, the armies of the Anti-Messiah will gather against Jerusalem and fall. Again, none will be left (Revelations 16:16; Revelations 19). At that time, Miriam’s song will echo, this time in the mouth of the Children of God of all ages, through a spontaneous eruption of praise and adoration to our mighty God (Revelations 5:9; 14:3; 15:3).

May it be soon Abba, even in our days!

RESURRECTED JERUSALEM

Matthew 23:37
  "O, Jerusalem, Jerusalem, … How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings,…!

From the very beginning of time Hashem established Jerusalem as the central place of worship for His people. Ancient writings even point to it as the place where Adam first stood on his feet. It was also in Jerusalem that Abraham performed the act of obedience by which today all of humanity stands a chance to reconcile with God (Genesis 22; 28:14).

As the Children of Israel are readying to enter and conquer the Land God gave them, Moses gives his final instructions (Deuteronomy). What most concerns him is the assimilation of the people with the cultures already in the land. It is for that reason that God had demanded the centralization of the worship system in Jerusalem. Offerings could be given to Levites anywhere, but God’s tithes were to be given only in Jerusalem. This drew the people to always return to the focal point of Jerusalem. This did not eventually prevent assimilation, but it kept it at bay; even if the country would stray, Jerusalem would still be a point of reference.

This is what happened at the time of the division of the kingdom. In order to get the loyalty of the people, Jeroboam initiated a worship system in the regions of the tribe of Dan. Most of the Levites then fled to Judah, so Jeroboam also established his own priesthood in disobedience to the command that only Levites, sons of Aaron, should be priests (Exodus 27:21). Jeroboam also changed the days of the Feast of Tabernacles (1 Kings 12). All this, Jeroboam did in contravention of the Torah command to not add nor take away from the Commandments of God Deuteronomy 4:2; 12:32). Come to think of it, this is what the Anti-Christ will do at the end of days; he will create a counterfeit religion that looks like the original, but is actually the anti-thesis (2 Thessalonians 2:3-4).

When the disciples were discussing the issue of Gentile assimilation to the faith of Messiah, they referenced themselves to Amos’ prophecy concerning the ‘resurrection’ of David’s Tabernacle. This Tabernacle was in Jerusalem (Acts 15; Amos 9:11-12).

Because of the abomination (Daniel 9:27;11:31), Jerusalem was desolate for nearly 2,000 years. Now the time to comfort Zion has come and Jerusalem is resurrecting (Isaiah 51:3). We should therefore all look to Jerusalem, the Place where our Messiah also resurrected, as our focal point, the ‘Ground Zero’ of our Messianic conviction.

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem, the psalmist said (Psalms 122:6). As he uttered these words, did he foresee how much they were needed? Jerusalem is the most war-torn conquered and re-conquered city in the world.

Do you hear the galloping hooves on the horizon? Yeshua, the real King of Jerusalem is coming to take His Bride from those who abused her for centuries. When that day comes to full fruition, you will want to be on the right side of history!

Hebrews 4:1
  Therefore, while the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us fear lest any of you should seem to have failed to reach it.

The writer of the Book of Hebrews uses the the Children of Israel refusing to enter the Land because of fear as a platform to encourage a disenfranchised first century community of Jewish believers in Israel (Numbers 14:1-4; Hebrews 3-4).

The two situations are truly analogous. The Children of Israel hear about the giants in the Land so they refuse to fight for it. As a result, they die in the desert and never entered God’s rest, the rest of finding a home where to build and settle their families; the home where they can finally put down their travelling gear down, live, exist, and multiply in a place that is their own by right. They were at the borders of receiving the fulfillment of that promise but they turned back due to fear fomented by lies (Numbers 14:2-3).

The first century Israeli believers were in the same predicament. They were ostracized by their brethren; excluded from Jewish communities, synagogues, and the Temple. They had lost all civic privileges because of their belief in Yeshua. All they had to do change their woeful predicament was to ‘turn back’ from that belief and they would be restored into Israeli society, which sadly some did. The Book of Hebrews then uses the story in Numbers as mentioned in Psalms 95 (vs. 95:7-11) to encourage these first century Jewish believers to not lose faith like their predecessors did. The Psalms says: Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts, …  I swore in my wrath, "They shall not enter my rest." (vs. 7-11).

Let’s go over that passage. ‘Today’ is a Talmudic way of talking about the Sabbath. In Hebrews, the Sabbath Rest of entering the Land is analogous to the idea of living in obedience to God through His Messiah. In essence a similar situation of obedience was presented to that new generation of fist century Jewish believers, and through the epistle, they were being warned of the dangers of turning their back on God’s promises because of fear just like their fathers did fourteen centuries before.  

This warning works for us today. So many hear the truth of Yeshua the living Jewish Messiah, but when they realize that kinds of havoc obeying Him will create in their lives, they refuse Him. They fear being ostracized from their families and their friends as their lifestyle changes. Obeying His Words in eating according to the Levitical diet and observing the Sabbath will certainly change their lives in many drastic ways socially and even financially, and some people do not want to go through that.

Come to think of it is quite amazing because these are the things the early believers were faced with all over the Roman Empire. Their new faith in the God of Israel took them away from their idolatrous environment to obey God’s commandments and as a result they lost all civic privileges in Greek and Roman society.

The days are coming and are already upon us when the Text of the Book of Hebrews will resound like a distant shofar:  “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts”.

THE MESSIANIC TEMPLE

Revelation 3:12
The one who conquers, I will make him a pillar in the temple of my God.

While the children of Judah were exiled in Babylon, they witnessed the capture of their king, the devastation of their beloved Jerusalem, and the destruction of God’s Temple. Ezekiel the prophet was among the captives who, after all hopes were gone for the deported nation, was given the ministry of encouragement. God used Ezekiel to encourage the people of the Babylonian dispersion by telling them of the wonderful future of a rebuilt Jerusalem hosting a magnificent glorious temple where the Messiah Himself served (Ezekiel 40: and forward).

Oddly enough, as picky as God can seem on these things, the architectural plans and service details of the Messianic era Temple are different than those of the first Temple.  When the captives returned and started rebuilding, it would have seemed natural that they follow the blue print of Ezekiel’s prophetic temple but they did not. The prophets of the day believed that the temple they were to build right after their return from Babylon would not last forever. So whereas they decided to incorporate some of Ezekiel’s plan, they stuck close to the layout of the first temple. They understood that the Temple of Ezekiel’s vision belonged to another time, to the time pertaining Messiah’s actual reign on earth.

Since Ezekiel’s Temple prophecies have therefore not been fulfilled, they now serve as an encouragement for us who are still in dispersion, for all believers are strangers and exiles on this earth (Hebrews 11:13) waiting to return to where we belong in the Kingdom of God.  

So whatever upheaval we see in the Middle-East, we must fix our eyes on these prophecies which tell us of the glorious future of the Messianic age when Messiah Himself who has the true roadmap for peace in the area will reign from His Temple in Jerusalem. The Torah will be the Law of the Land flowing out of Zion to fill the nations of the world who will bring their glory to Jerusalem. It will be a time of great restoration when Messiah Himself will wipe our tears away while bringing true justice to the world.
